Breast-cancer initiatives launch

Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) has launched a new initiative to educate young women and men about the key role living a healthy lifestyle plays in preventing breast cancer.

Throughout October, recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, action-sports-affiliated charities Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) and Keep A Breast (KAB) will promote new athlete-grounded initiatives to further raise awareness of and support for breast-cancer prevention and treatment efforts.

Called "Be Healthy. Get Active. Ride!", B4BC's newest campaign aims to encourage young women and men to increase their fitness and overall health through participation in surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding and wakeboarding, among other healthy sport-based pursuits. Ten female athletes, including surfer Sage Erickson, snowboarder Hana Beaman and skateboarder Mimi Knoop, will serve as the face of this year-round program. "The 'Be Healthy. Get Active. Ride!' campaign spreads a valuable message to young women," says Beaman, a longtime ambassador to B4BC. "It's important to know what to look for in terms of the warning signs of breast cancer, but it's also important to recognize that living a healthy lifestyle is the first line of defense."

Also, special to the month of October, B4BC has partnered with Gnu Snowboards to host a B-Pro snowboard giveaway through Facebook. For more than a decade, Gnu has been donating a portion of sales of its B-Pro model snowboard and splitboard directly to B4BC.

Earlier this month, Keep A Breast debuted "This Is My Pink Ribbon," a short film featuring, among others, male professional skateboarders sharing their reasons for becoming involved in the cause. The video supports a broader online KAB initiative that allows you to contribute to the "This Is My Pink Ribbon" conversation through Facebook, Twibbon, Twitter, Youtube and Instagram.

Additionally, special KAB sport shops such as Killer Dana, Tilly's, The Grind and Coastal Edge will participate in October's dollar-donation campaign, where consumers can donate $1 to KAB in-store, then paste up a special-edition paper version of the iconic "I Love Boobies!" bracelet that can be personalized with their own message.
