Shaun White out of X Games Tignes
Citing the time away from on-snow Olympic training because of international travel, 23-time X Games medalist Shaun White will not compete at X Games Tignes in March."Shaun did not compete at the test event in Sochi and will not be competing at [X Games Tignes] due to his training commitments and the number of days on snow he would lose to overseas travel," White's representative said in a statement. "He loved competing in Tignes last season, and will miss the European spectators who were so enthusiastic and supportive."
In January, White continued his career dominance in the pipe, winning his sixth straight X Games gold medal in Men's Snowboard SuperPipe at X Games Aspen. He then backed it up with a first-place finish in the 2013 U.S. Grand Prix Halfpipe one week later in Park City, Utah.
White didn't fare as well in slopestyle, an event in which he plans to compete in the 2014 Olympics. His triple-cork showdown with snowboarder Mark McMorris in Men's Snowboard Slopestyle at X Games Aspen never materialized. McMorris ran away with his second straight Slopestyle gold medal, while White had difficulty landing tricks higher up the mountain in the final round, ultimately finishing in fifth place.
White's absence from the Olympic test events in Sochi, Russia, last week allowed Japan's Taku Hiraoka to take top honors in Men's Snowboard Halfpipe. The test events gave Olympic hopefuls their first shot at trying out the courses. However, the slopestyle competition was canceled because of warm weather.
X Games Tignes runs from March 20-22 in Tignes, France.
