Who is this Harrison Roach?
Harrison Roach is from Noosa Heads, Australia. He surfs really well. Not in the traditional way, or, maybe, that's exactly what he does best. Depends on your point of view and frame of reference. But does it really matter? He's fun to watch. He primarily rides longboards, and as noted, he does it very well. Here's proof positive that classic surf style is anything but dead.
Cross It Up
Roach's first proper board was a used 5'11" Sam Egan channel bottom with a Cheyne Horan star fin. That might explain his eclectic taste in equipment. He pretty much grew up spending all his time in the water and riding whatever he could get his hands on ... and still does.
Turn It Up
Roach lists Martin Potter as one of his first surfing heroes. Also on that list are Kelly Slater, Joel Tudor, Dave Rastovich, Kassia Meador, Christian Wach and Mark Matthews. Style is, after all, where you find it.
Refine The Line
As far as the shapes he rides, taking outlines from the past and blending them with modern refinements, his quiver is unique. Not necessarily a bunch of boards that look hard to ride, they're user friendly and work for pretty much anyone, not just the Rob Machado-types who can ride an ironing board.
Can You Kick It?
Rule number one: keep it fun. If you're not having fun you're not doing it right.
Man Turns Are Cool
The second coming of Billy Hamilton? Sure looks like it. Drawing inspiration from that transitionary period in the late '60s when longboard lines were still hip, but shortboard influences were starting to seep into the sphere of influence, Roach keeps it classic.
Slide The Glide
Unusual for a lot of the younger surfers, Roach is well-versed in surfing history. It's important to him and evident in every wave he rides.
It all starts with a good bottom turn. Whether you're looking at hanging heals or launching above the lip, the fundamentals of good surfing start with one's ability to draw power off the bottom. But we don't have to tell Roach that.
Cheating Is Trying
Something as basic as a cheat five in trim brings a smile to Roach's face.
A very well rounded surfer, with a gentleman's manners and a friendly demeanor, Roach is a likable guy. And if you ever get a chance to watch him surf, you'll certainly become a fan.
