10 Places to Ride This Summer
Just because the rest of the country is thinking about bikes and barbecues doesnt mean winter has to end. Here are 10 places to ski and snowboard from June through October. Zermatt's Theodul Glacier is the highest lift-accessed skiing in Europe. You take a funicular from the village to the glacier; on June 15, theyre replacing the old one, nicknamed "boneshaker," with a new, faster, quieter one.
Beartooth Basin, Mont.
The third annual Beartooth Summer Session, a hybrid big mountain/slopestyle event, is taking place June 5-9 at Beartooth Basin Ski Area. If you don't want to hit cliffs and slushy jumps in front of a crowd, the two-Poma resort is scheduled to be open until July 13.
Whistler is a mecca for summer ski and snowboard camps, and July is when it goes off. Sign up for Girls Week, in honor of Sarah Burke, at Momentum Ski Camp or ride with the U.S. Freesking and Snowboard teams at Camp of Champions.
Treble Cone, New Zealand
World Heli Challenge starts the last week of July in Wanaka, New Zealand, and runs through the middle of August. Or show up the week before and have the bowls and chutes of Treble Cone to yourself.
Timberline, on the south side of Mt. Hood, is open for summer riding at least through Labor Day. If you want to dirtbag it, post up at Forest Service campgrounds down the road toward Government Camp.
At the end of the summer, Hotel Portillo, at the bottom of the ski area, becomes basecamp for a lot of the snow sports industry. Hike and ride the Super C Couloir, and dine on Chilean steaks for lunch at Tio Bob's.
Las Leñas, Argentina
Las Leas is known for the technical terrain off the high-altitude Marte chair and for its party scene. If you like late-night discos and steep chutes, youre in the right place. This year is the resort s 30th anniversary.
Cerro Castor, Argentina
By September, you're going to have to go south to find snow. Cerro Castor, outside of Ushuaia, Argentina, is as south as it gets. The resort has hosted slopestyle events in the ramp-up to the 2014 Olympics, and it has good backcountry access.
Club Fields, New Zealand
The private club fields of New Zealands Southern Alps are minimal: usually just a few nutcracker rope tows and a warming hut. But theyre cheap, they access burly terrain and most of them are open through the middle of October.
Arapahoe Basin/Loveland, Colo.
Lift-served skiing comes back to North America in October in the form of a battle between neighboring ski areas, Loveland and Arapahoe Basin, over who can open first. A-Basin has taken the title for the past two years.
