By the time the defending Snowboarder X Adaptive champion had his leg amputated following an industrial accident, he had already experienced a lifetime of trauma: homelessness, parental drug abuse and the witnessing of his stepfather's suicide. But losing his left leg at age 21 to a skid steer's stabilizer bar only improved his career as a snowboarder. Today, he's the defending X Games Snowboarder X Adaptive gold medalist, a Paralympic medalist and a World Cup winner with a goal of sharing his story through public speaking. Gabel is also an ambassador for Team for Tomorrow, a humanitarian program run through the United States Olympic Committee. In October, Gabel received a $5000 grant from the High Fives Foundation and now rides on custom-made snowboards.
