What athletes eat: Skateboarder Jordyn Barratt's chocolate-banana smoothie
Hawaii native Jordyn Barratt got her start in sports as a surfer, and competed as a junior pro until 2016. But along the way she picked up skateboarding, and when the International Olympic Committee voted to add both surfing and skateboarding to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the 18-year-old had to choose which Olympic dream to follow. Skateboarding it was.
Since then, the two-time X Games medalist has moved to California to focus on skateboarding, walking dogs in her free time to supplement her sponsorship earnings. While getting ready to head to China for the Vans Park Pro Series Championship in Shanghai, we caught up with Barratt to get the inside scoop on how she fuels her body for serious skating.
"My mom and I live on our smoothies," she says. "It is super easy and you can make any kind you want with whatever ingredients for whatever mood you are in. If I feel like having some chocolate, I just add chocolate protein powder and it tastes just like a shake that is actually good for you!"

What I'm eating: A chocolate-banana smoothie
Why I'm eating it: My mom and I are both vegetarians, and we are always on the go and don't have a lot of time to cook. So we like to make a smoothie to substitute a meal for breakfast or lunch -- and some days even for dinner. Lately, my favorite has been this chocolate banana nut smoothie that tastes just like a chocolate shake from the ice cream store, which is funny because I usually don't even really like chocolate.

Full disclosure -- measurements are a guess. We seriously just dump things in. We have a lot of containers of seeds and proteins on our counter next to the blender, and we always add in things like chia, flax, coconut oil, spirulina, chlorella and protein powder to make it extra good and filling. My best advice is to just add in what you like in small bits and then you can always add more if it needs it while it's blending. And if you don't have all of these ingredients on hand, no worries. Just use what you have.
1 scoop vegan chocolate protein powder
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 tablespoons almond butter (or any kind of nut butter)
2 frozen bananas
A little bit of organic raw honey
1 tablespoon shaved coconut
1 teaspoon chia seeds
1 teaspoon brown flaxseed
1 teaspoon cacao nibs
A dash of cinnamon
A few bits of ice
Almond or coconut milk
Blend it up. If it seems too thick you can always add a little water or a little more almond milk. There are no rules or right or wrong way to make a smoothie. Just put in whatever sounds good to you and see how it turns out.
