What athletes eat: Runner Sara Hall's celebratory apple pie

Longtime professional runner Sara Hall pulled an impressive feat on Sunday, winning the California International Marathon, host to the 2017 USA Track and Field championships, in a time of 2:28:10 (her second fastest ever). The most amazing part: The race came just five weeks after she set a marathon PR of 2:27:21 at the Frankfurt Marathon.

While few elite racers would try to pull that type of a marathon double, Hall, a California native, was tempted by the opportunity to compete in a national championship race just a couple hours away from her Redding, California, home. And a close-to-home race meant having her four daughters there to cheer her on.

Hall shared with us one of her favorite special occasion recipes -- perfect for the holidays, a new PR, a national championship win, or all three:

Day and time: Any time I'm celebrating -- we served it at our wedding in the Santa Cruz Mountains in September of 2005

Place: Usually at home

What I'm eating: Swedish apple pie

Why I'm eating it. It's super easy to make, and I have not met anyone who doesn't like it. It's so good that we made 30 of them for our wedding instead of cake!

Whose recipe: My mom's

The recipe:


4 cups sliced, peeled apples
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup butter (MUST be butter!)
A pinch of salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped nuts

Fill a 9-inch pie pan with apples (it makes its own crust). Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Mix butter, salt, sugar, flour, egg and nuts together, then sprinkle on top of apples. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
