Get to know the Chainsmokers
The Chainsmokers, an American DJ duo formed in 2012, are slated to appear at X Games Aspen 2017. Comprising Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, the duo rose to popularity over the past several years, and were recently hailed as the favorite electronic/dance music artist of 2016 at the American Music Awards. This is an inside look at life behind the music.
Closer to the top
In November 2016, the hit song "Closer" by the Chainsmokers became one of the biggest songs of 2016, with 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The track also features vocal contributions from Halsey, and the song currently has close to 1 billion views on YouTube. The Chainsmokers count Blink-182 as an influence to the melody of the track.
"If you have no free time, you're doing something right," says The Chainsmokers.
Cool and fresh
One half of The Chainsmokers, Drew Taggart, was recently featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Spotlight in the music and entertainment category for 2016. "Being young gives me the ability to have my finger on the pulse of what's cool, fresh, innovative, fun. We are what's next," Taggart told Forbes. Meanwhile, Pall, who is is 31, called Taggart's inclusion on the list as "another passive aggressive move on his part to remind me I'm older (but more wise)." Clearly, sarcasm and joking around does not escape The Chainsmokers.
"There's nothing wrong with genres, but we don't make our music to fit into one or the other," the Chainsmokers said via Twitter. "So we got plans to make all sorts of different stuff."
Deep fried Oreos
Between huge hits and major awards, 2016 was quite the year for the Chainsmokers, who recently announced an exclusive three-year residency at Las Vegas nightclubs owned by Wynn Nightlife. "Ours was a year that taught us so much about ourselves, just so many surreal moments," they say. "Also, we discovered deep-fried Oreos so that was pretty big too."
Thought it might seem as if partying was the national pastime of the Chainsmokers, that is hardly the case. Alex Pall prefers to read, while Andrew Taggart has a penchant for video games. Both are also dog fanatics, as evidenced by their Snapchat presence.
The Chainsmokers suffer from real-life problems like the rest of us, including phone charger issues. "Ugh, when you thought you were charging your phone all night but charger fell out of wall and now you're on 5%," the Chainsmokers tweeted in December. In the same week, there were cheesesteak problems. "Should I have my fourth cheese steak of the day," wondered the Chainsmokers, also via Twitter.
But the Chainsmokers aren't infallible. "I would do anything for an edit button on Twitter," the Chainsmokers say, ironically via Twitter.
Don't let me down
The Chainsmokers make their X Games Aspen 2017 debut on Jan. 28 at 9:30 p.m. MT. Tickets are still available via XGames.com.
