Foz Fusion: X Games MUSIC
"Detonautas" is a combination of the Portuguese words for "detonators" and "citizens of the Internet" -- a tribute to the band's humble beginnings in a chat room circa 1997. L to R: Philippe, Fbio Brasil, Tchello, DJ Cleston and Renato Rocha. At bottom: Tico Santa Cruz.
Six-pack Detonautas is the largest of the five groups playing the X Games MUSIC showcase at Foz do Iguau 2013, and they're no strangers to rocking a sizable crowd. Here, the Latin Grammy-nominated band brings the noise at the Rock in Rio concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
CPM 22 came together in 1995, drawing inspiration from such punk legends as the Ramones and the Misfits as well as contemporaries Green Day and Pennywise. The band's sound quickly developed an underground following that has catapulted them into the national spotlight, landing them on Top 40 lists and Brazilian television shows.
Since 2002, So Paulo, Brazil-based quartet CPM 22 has won multiple MTV Video Music Brazil Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rock Video, Viewer's Choice Video of the Year, Best Live Performance in a Video, and Dream Band. They'll infuse some ska/punk flavor into the X Games MUSIC showcase on Friday, April 19.
Goetz -- a self-described "outside observer" -- has visited more than 65 countries and is fluent in his native English as well as Spanish and, happily for X Games Foz attendees, Portuguese. He'll be performing with legendary Brazilian composer/musician Arthur Maia on Saturday, April 20.
While X Games Foz do Iguau fans will enjoy Goetz's melodies, they'll miss out on his other creative outlets: filmmaking and photography. Goetz's "Sofia: A Documentary" won the Best Documentary category at the 2006 Surfer Poll Awards and he's also been behind the lens for such adventure-based TV shows as "Survivor" and "Amazing Race."
Bonde do Rolê
Bonde do Rol is from Curitiba, in southern Brazil -- also the spiritual home to Brazilian BMX dirt riding. Their unique sound blends everything from grunge to "funk carioca" (Brazilian funk) into danceable electro beats that caught the attention of EDM producer Diplo, who quickly signed them to his label, Mad Decent. From L to R: MC Laura Taylor, MC Pedro D'eyrot and MC/DJ Gorky.
At just 20 years old, Robinson's already become an EDM sensation whose tracks tend to top the iTunes dance charts on contact. His set at X Games Foz do Iguau comes hot on the heels of his latest release, "Easy (Remixes)," a collaboration with fellow EDM producer/composer DJ Mat Zo, which hit stores April 14.
Robinson's fully at home playing on the road, having spun sets at Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo, South by Southwest, Beyond Wonderland and more. Here he thumps beats at Los Angeles' Palladium in February 2013.
